Whether you are an international student with driving experience from your home country or someone without any driving experience, one of the first things you should prioritize upon arriving in Canada is obtaining a driver's license. This will serve as a Canadian proof of ID, eliminating the need to always carry your passport with you.

So, are you ready to hit the road in Ontario? But wait a movement Obtaining a driver's license in Ontario involves a structured process designed to ensure that all drivers are well-prepared and safe. We have broken down the steps for you to easily guide you through the process of obtaining your Ontario driver's license.

Step 1: Prepare for the Written Knowledge Test

Before you take your G1 license test, be prepared. The G1 written test is comprised of two sections: 20 questions on road signs and 20 questions on traffic rules, totaling 40 questions. You need to score at least 80% (32 out of 40 questions 16 from road sign + 16 from traffic rules) to pass the G1 written test.

  • Study the Handbook: To prepare for your G1 license exam, make sure to study the handbook. The handbook contains sample questions similar to those asked in the G1 written test, helping you get ready for the exam.

  • Practice Tests: To assess your knowledge and boost your confidence, take practice tests available online. These tests will help you get a feel for the types of questions you'll encounter on the G1 written test.

Step 2: Take the Written Knowledge Test

Visit a DriveTest center nearby: When you feel like you are ready to take the written knowledge test Find the DriveTest location nearby - https://drivetest.ca/find-a-drivetest-centre/find-a-drivetest-centre/

  • Booking: You can book your appointment online or simply walk in for your G1 exam.
  • **Identification: **Bring two pieces of identification with you to verify your age and identity.
  • Fees: The charges for the G1 test are $159.75, which will be collected at the time of application. Make sure to bring money for the test fees – you can pay with cash, debit, or credit card.
If you fail the G1 exam on your first attempt, you can retake it on the spot for an additional fee of $16.
  • Vision: You will need to also pass Vision Test so bring your Glasses or contact lenses (if you need to wear them to drive)

Congratulations! If you pass your G1 test, you will receive a G1 license paper slip on the spot, and your physical license card will be delivered to your address within a couple of weeks. This serves as a proof of identity in Canada, but keep in mind that you won't be able to buy or drive a car on your own with a G1 license, as there are additional steps and restrictions to follow.

Step 3: Take the G2 Road Test

After obtaining your G1 license, the next step is to work towards your G2 license. With a G2 license, you'll have the freedom to drive a car on your own.

Good news is if you had drivers license back in your home country for more than 1 year of experience you can submit your drivers license abstract of your home country at any DriveTest location you will be eligible for G2 right away and can book your G2 test date on the spot if available. But if you don’t have any experience you will have to wait for a year to book your G2 test date. So, having an Indian experience is a plus point.

Here are steps to get your G2 licensee.

  • Book Your Test: Schedule your G2 road test appointment at a DriveTest Centre or you can book online at https://drivetest.ca/.
  • Driving school: To ensure you're fully prepared for your G2 test, consider enrolling in a driving school approximately 2 months before your test date. Even if you already have experience driving, taking a few lessons can help familiarize you with Ontario's traffic rules and driving regulations. This extra preparation can increase your chances of success on the G2 test.
  • Pass the test: To obtain your G2 license, you must pass a road test with a certified DriveTest instructor. During the test, you'll drive with the instructor, demonstrating your driving skills and strictly follow traffic rules and regulations. If you follow the instructor's instructions and comply with all traffic rules, you should have no problem passing your G2 test.
If you don't pass your G2 road test on your first attempt, you can try again by paying an additional fee of $53.75.

Congratulations once more! If you've passed your G2 test, you're now eligible for solo driving with a G2 license. You can now drive on all roads and highways in Ontario.

Step 4: Obtain Your Full G License

Final step is to obtain your full G license. So, after holding your G2 license for a year you will be eligible for the final step:

  • Book your test: After holding your G2 license for a year, you'll be eligible to take the G test. You can book your test online at Drivetest.ca by paying a fee of $91.25, or you can visit any nearby DriveTest center.
  • **Pass the test: **Passing your G test may seem daunting, but if you've been driving in Canada with your G2 license, it should be manageable. However, obtaining your G license is not as easy as it may seem. Since this is the full license you can get in Ontario, it's recommended to take a few classes from a driving school to ensure you're fully prepared. During the test, you'll need to follow all traffic and driving rules. Making any minor mistakes could result in having to retake the test.
But if you strictly follow all the rules, you'll obtain your full G license, which has no further restrictions on driving.

By following these steps, you'll be well on your way to obtaining your full driver's license in Ontario. Remember, each stage is designed to ensure that you're a safe and responsible driver.

Happy driving!
