Newfoundland and Labrador Wins Back 1,000 Immigration Spaces for 2025

Great news for Newfoundland and Labrador! After pushing back against federal cuts, the province has successfully secured the return of 1,000 economic immigration spaces for 2025. This brings the total economic immigration allocation to 2,525 spaces for the year.

Earlier this month, the federal government had slashed the province’s immigration spaces by 50% under the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Nominee Program (NLPNP) and the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP). However, the province argued its case, highlighting its unique needs, low temporary resident population, and ability to attract international talent.

Here’s what the new agreement includes:

  • NLPNP spaces increased to 2,050 (was 1,050 for 2025).
  • AIP spaces remain at 475.
  • 290 humanitarian migrants will be welcomed over the next two years, with the federal government covering relocation and housing costs.

This decision will help address labor shortages in key sectors like health care, early childhood education, and construction. While this is a step forward, the province continues to advocate for even more immigration spaces to support local businesses and population growth.

To implement these changes, the province is temporarily pausing new economic immigration applications and job vacancy assessments until mid-February. However, applications for in-demand occupations, like health care workers, will still be processed.

Employers interested in hiring humanitarian migrants can reach out to HumanitarianPath@gov.nl.ca.

This is a win for Newfoundland and Labrador, ensuring the province can continue to grow and thrive! 🍁
